CAPE LIBERTY CRUISE PORT

CAPE LIBERTY CRUISE PORT

Terminal Location: Bayonne, New Jersey

Opened in May 2004 in the former Bayonne Military Ocean Terminal, the Cape Liberty cruise port first handled Royal Caribbean ships and a year later Celebrity ships. It’s proximity to the New Jersey Turnpike (3 miles) and to Newark Liberty International Airport (7 miles) is a major draw. Manhattan via the Holland Tunnel is only eight miles. The Cape Liberty cruise port can handle two ships simultaneously although on most sailing days, there will be just one.

From the cruise port's entrance gate, it’s about a two-mile drive the length of the peninsula to the set down and check-in facilities. The ships dock some distance from check-in and a shuttle bus is provided to and from the ship’s gangway. Eventually the berths will be alongside the cargo sheds that serve as the cruise terminal.

Once aboard ship, you have views north to the Statue of Liberty, the Lower Manhattan skyline, across the Upper Bay to Brooklyn and south to Staten Island and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

After disembarking at the end of the cruise, you’ll find local taxicabs meet the ship arrivals to transfer passengers to the airports, Newark, Penn Station and Manhattan via the Holland or Lincoln tunnels.

Cape Liberty Cruise Port Parking: Secure outdoor parking is available for $15 per day.

TRANSPORTATION

Taxis: From Newark airport, we recommend taking a taxi to the Cape Liberty cruise port, a seven-mile drive.  However, from New York City, including LaGuardia and JFK Airport, a car service is more economical and much simpler.  Passengers taking taxis from New York and the airports pay the fare on the meter within New York City, then double the meter fare once in New Jersey, plus bridge and/or tunnel tolls and tip. A New York City taxi driver is not required to take passengers out of the city to New Jersey, so you must ask first.

Car Services: Car Services (limousines) are reliable alternatives, and the vehicles range in size from standard sedans for two or three up to vans for small groups. Usually, the most economical way to use one is to make a reservation in advance for to be picked up outside the airline terminal.   Major car services have fleets on hand at the airports.  An inside the terminal pick up, where the driver holds up a card with your name, is more expensive as the driver has to park the car and then wait until you arrive.  Reliable car services are Carmel (1-800-9 Carmel or 212-666-6666) and Dial 7 (800-777-8888 or 212-777-7777).  Those who reside in the boroughs should use a local car service.  When booking the reservation you’ll be told the flat rate and that tolls will be added on.  The recommended tipping rate is 20% of the rate.  Establish the procedure for your return when you make the initial reservation. Upon arrival back from your cruise, make a call only when you know when you will be off the ship and through immigration and customs. If the driver has to wait, you will be paying extra for his time.
