BROOKLYN CRUISE TERMINAL

BROOKLYN CRUISE TERMINAL

Terminal Location: Pier 12, Red Hook

Opened on April 15, 2006, the Brooklyn cruise terminal was built within an existing cargo shed at Pier 12, Atlantic Basin, on the Red Hook waterfront opposite Governors Island.  It is located about 1.5 miles south of the Brooklyn Bridge or just over a mile, as the crow flies, from Battery Park at the tip of Lower Manhattan.

Cunard Line and Princess Cruises ships sail from the Brooklyn cruise terminal.

Terminal facilities are limited to bathrooms, a few vending machines and a seating area prior to boarding. From the cruise terminal property and aboard your ship, there are clear views to Upper New York Bay, Staten Island, Statue of Liberty, Governors Island, Lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn waterfront north to Brooklyn Heights and the immediate Red Hook neighborhood. Red Hook’s main street is Van Brunt, a 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal, lined with small stores and a few restaurants catering to the immediate low-rise neighborhood.

Brooklyn Cruise Terminal Parking: The cruise terminal has secure outdoor parking within easy walking distance of the terminal building. Multi-day rates are $18 per day; 20-minute short-term parking is $6. 10 hours is $19. 24 hours is $20.

IMPORTANT:
Taxis & Limousines:
For cruise ship departures from the Brooklyn cruise terminal, taxis are a good bet from the area airports and midtown Manhattan. And sure, taxi drivers are not only required by law to take you anywhere within New York (including Brooklyn!), they’re also supposed to know how find the best route.  Take my word for this: unless they live in Brooklyn, they’ll have no idea how to get there and will rant as they drive in circles.  So if you opt for a taxi, print out the instructions below and hand them to the driver.  Or, arrange a pick up from a Brooklyn Car Service.

Taxis  are in very limited supply for cruise ship arrivals so we recommend using a Brooklyn Car Service (the major car companies frequently refuse pick-ups and drop-offs in Brooklyn since they’ll be traveling empty in one direction.)  I use Metroline, (718-388-1111).  The cruise port facility has it’s own car service: Executive Transportation Group (718-438-1100), which has cars at the port for disembarking passengers. Rates are posted beginning at $41 (plus toll when applicable and tip) to Manhattan below 23rd Street; Midtown 23rd-59th Street $51; LaGuardia $58; JFK $70; Newark $95. These rates are much cheaper than what the cruise ships charge for sedan and van services when booked on board.

Cruise Line Transfers: However, for independent passengers, the cruise lines provide motor coach transfers, $40 to and from Newark, La Guardia and JFK, and $25 for Grand Central, Penn Station and Port Authority Bus Terminal.  Ask your travel agent to book the transfer for you.
